The Reader

The literary and visual influences of everyday life

Watching this with Alex for one of his classes. “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” was based off the Odyssey by Homer, but by no means was an entire remake of the epic poem. Instead, it used the basic story line and reformed it under a different setting while intelligently and artfully creating a unique set of characters for a new generation to love. In general, remake ideas either can go great, or can go very badly. I think exact remake ideas of films in general should be trashed (example: Fame, Footloose, and the much controversial Dirty Dancing remake that’s soon to be out). It’s just insulting to remake an already amazing story put to film without putting a modern spin or twist on it, or at least attempting to apply the overall message of the original to a new scenario or unique set of characters. Because honestly, if I want to watch Dirty Dancing, then dang it, I’m going to watching Dirty Dancing. Not the remake.
